We have exciting news! Visit Durango’s staff has completed our disability inclusion and awareness training and successfully earned the Visitable Advocate Certification! Durango, Colorado is a beautiful old west mountain town located in the Southwest corner of the state. It features everything from lakes and rivers, to the rugged San Juan Mountains. It also has a well-preserved historic downtown lined with restaurants, art galleries and boutique hotels, and it is in close proximity to mesmerizing cultural heritage sites like Mesa Verde National Park. No matter your interests, there is something for everyone in Durango. It has been a pleasure working with the Visit Durango (Durango Area Tourism Office) team as they recognize the importance of accessibility and disability inclusion. Visit Durango’s focus and commitment to inclusive visitor and resident experiences is remarkable; they will soon be rolling out an innovative community education program around inclusive tourism. We're thrilled to announce the completion of Durango's Destination Management Master Plan, a project Bethanie DeRose, CDME and I had the pleasure of working on with the City of Durango and Visit Durango (Durango Area Tourism Office). Having visited Durango in different seasons, I've been captivated by its stunning natural beauty, from the beautiful town to the majestic scenery of Mesa Verde National Park. I even got to spot wild horses on my last trip there, which was truly an unbelievable experience! This project, however, offered a different kind of excitement– the chance to contribute to Durango's future as a sustainable tourism destination, so that the future generations could also enjoy this magical scenery. We focused on creating a roadmap for tourism growth that prioritizes environmental responsibility and community well-being alongside economic development, for the years to come. We'd also like to thank the stakeholders and community for their contribution to this plan. We can't wait to see the plan come to life and witness Durango flourish as a gem of a destination over the next decade!
